My machine at work is operating correctly using the setup so I think it's got something to do with the upgrade process. My home machine (broken kmail) was upgraded from 2.2.2 but the one at work went from 2.2.2 -> 3.0.3 -->3.1b1 ->3.1b2.
Also this machine has problems with KDM in that the keyboard does not respond. If I use startx to get to X the keyboard works normally.
