I was looking into the same area yesterday, to see how to set environment variables up on entry to KDE. The very first thing KDE 2.x does on loading, in /etc/kde2/kde2.sh, is to change the X moire effect for a plain grey whilst it loads the configured background. However I've never seen it do this in practice so I suspect it is too slow on my lowly K6-200. Nick
