I made a /etc/X11/Xsession.d/95kde-environment file containing: export KDEDIRS=/usr:/usr/local/kde If you don't want it global, it should be possible to add it to $HOME/.xsession, but I haven't tried this. Don't forget to add /usr/local/kde/bin to your $PATH. btw, if you want kdm to source your .bash_profile when logging in, add --login after #!/bin/sh in /usr/bin/startkde -- This message has been ROT-13 encrypted twice for extra security.
