Ok, Here's my problem - the kstyle module in kcontrol only lists the styles that come with Qt (eg. qt platinum, qt redmond, etc). All of the kde styles (marble, riscos, hicolor, etc) don't appear selectable.
Various amounts of stracing and reading .rc files haven't shown any clues as to where it's looking, but the kde styles ARE installed in /opt/kde3/share and KDEDIR is set accordingly.
