Thanks for the tip (you too David) -- using update-alternatives did the trick. I still can't figure out why KDE wasn't paying attention to the setting in kcontrol though -- that is the very one I was toggling. I'd like to think that it would work and I wouldn't have to change the system-wide default (though it's ok in this case). -- Justin R.
