Sorry to followup myself, but the '! -d' check is too simple. One has to check that $kdehome/share/apps/kfm/bookmark/ is empty and, if bookmark.xml exists, that it's equal to '<!DOCTYPE xbel ><xbel/>' before one copies a default bookmarks.xml.
