For updating /etc/alternatives there is a tool in Debian called update-alternatives. I'm not sure, but on unstable a switch from x-window-manager to a separation of x-session-manager and x-window-manager seems to have occured. Because kde2 currently starts it's own window manager kwin on startup the entry x-window-manager entry in /etc/alternatives may not be of any use. For me its missing on unstable, but x-session-manager does the trick. If you are running unstable or testing, try the following as root: update-alternatives --remove x-window-manager /usr/bin/kde2 update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-session-manager x-session-manager /usr/bin/kde2 50 Now kde2 should start up if you type "startx" on the prompt. Does anybody know what the status of the x-session-manager and x-window-manager separation is? Is it possibly to run for ex. the blackbox window manager with kde2 as soon as x-window-manager points to blackbox? Is this the correct meaning of x-window-manager and x-session-manager, or does it mean that x-window-manager is for window manager only environments like fvwm or such and x-session-manager is for session manager with their own window managers like kde and gnome, any hints? - -- WfG, Chris Get my public key from wwwkeys.pgp.net or its mirrors.
