ELKI is also affected by the following openjdk-8 bugs: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=787955 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=798131 that make the GUI mode unusable, unless you disable GTK accessibility in openjdk.
