Just FYI: I use git+TopGit for packaging testng, you may "debcheckout" it if you want to have a look. Works pretty well so far. (Additionally the upstream repo is actually Subversion, I'm mirroring it with git-svn.) That package is maintained outside pkg-java since it was a kind of trial balloon for using git. I will probably use git for any new packaging work where upstream uses git or svn (but wouldn't necessarily recommend switching existing packages).
