I have found a somewhat different problem in a sid chroot:

$ apt-get install sun-java5-bin java-gcj-compat
[...]
Selecting previously deselected package java-gcj-compat-headless.
Unpacking java-gcj-compat-headless (from
.../java-gcj-compat-headless_1.0.80-5.1_amd64.deb) ...
Selecting previously deselected package gcj-jre-headless.
Unpacking gcj-jre-headless (from .../gcj-jre-headless_4%3a4.3.3-9_amd64.deb) ...
Processing triggers for install-info ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/sun-java5-jre_1.5.0-19-1_all.deb
 /var/cache/apt/archives/sun-java5-bin_1.5.0-19-1_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Running 'dpkg --configure -a' fixed the problem. I do not know what is
wrong here.

Installing gcj-jre-headless without sun-java5-bin succeeds without any errors.

Cheers,
Torsten
