I do not know of such efforts but have been thinking about doing that myself since (at least at the moment) I use Java3D quite often. Vecmath is already in Debian and since Java3D seems to be free now, I think it's worth doing so. I will not be able to start with that in the next 3-4 weeks but I'm interested in joining efforts, in case you want to start now.
