Oh, it doesn't preclude it. I just think it's not as convenient as it sounds. A pure java implementation would be immediately useful for all the other free JVMs out there which have a working AWT (wonka, kaffe, gcj(?)) on all platforms without introducing another dependency on the toolkit used for the Swing implementation. The only thing I found was a post by Troy Wu (CC:ed) http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/java/2000-08/msg00002.html but no code. He claims a 5-10 fold improvement in drawing parformance, but there is no code.
