Not to jump in and be a pain, but IMHO it would be quite desirable for the upgrades to work properly. The jikes-* wrappers have been around in unstable for quite some time now, so they presumably have a lot of users already. And if something does need to change at a later date then a silent failure to upgrade might be a tricky bug to chase down.
