Hi I'll try to describe the problems that have hitted me when implementing the proposed policy. I have uploaded java-common (main) and java2-common (non-free) which creates a couple of dummy packages. Because some people do not think dummy packages (in the ftp-maintainer circle) are good it can not be installed.
So because of this I have decided to ask for the removal of the current dummy packages because they will only make confusion because some virtual packages have dummy packages and some have not. But before I do that I ask here to get your opinions. I'll strip out the dummy package information later this week if I do not hear a consensus about the existance of the dummy packages. The reason is that java-common is not possible to maintain with the current situation. Something must be done. opal@auric:/org/ftp.debian.org/incoming$ ls -l java* -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 613 Nov 14 03:12 java-common-non-free_0.1.dsc -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 1786 Nov 14 03:12 java-common-non-free_0.1.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 1175 Nov 14 03:12 java-common-non-free_0.1_i386.changes -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 708 Nov 14 03:17 java-common_0.8.dsc -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 14001 Nov 14 03:18 java-common_0.8.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 105184 Nov 14 03:17 java-common_0.8_all.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 2076 Nov 14 03:18 java-common_0.8_i386.changes -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 4450 Nov 14 03:17 java-compiler-dummy_0.8_all.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 4256 Nov 14 03:17 java-virtual-machine-dummy_0.8_all.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 2424 Nov 14 03:17 java1-runtime-dummy_0.8_all.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 gibreel Debian 652 Jan 26 21:43 java2-common_1.dsc -rw-r--r-- 1 gibreel Debian 4993 Jan 26 21:43 java2-common_1.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 gibreel Debian 5890 Jan 26 21:43 java2-common_1_all.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 gibreel Debian 1167 Jan 26 21:43 java2-common_1_i386.changes -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 1522 Nov 14 03:12 java2-compiler-dummy_0.1_all.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 opal Debian 1546 Nov 14 03:12 java2-runtime-dummy_0.1_all.deb opal@auric:/org/ftp.debian.org/incoming$ ps You see the pacakges have been sitting there since november. There is a strange thing too, gibriel is owning some of them even if I uploaded. That is probably just a mistake though. I'll ask for the removal the day after tomorrow if I do not hear a strong objection. To serve the same functionality I'll describe how to create a own dummy package (even with source?) in some README file in java-common. But if you have other solutions (like convinved ftp admins) I'll go for that solution instead. The basic problem is that this is a proposed policy and not a real one.
