there's several free java text editors with a plugin architecture out
there, take a look at:

i'm sure there's tons of free C++ text editors, too.

just a thought. 
if nothing out there pleases me, i write it myself, too. ;)

i'm not an expert, but since there are many GPL java programs that
shouldn't be a problem.
