Guarda se manca la chiamata al dns nella conf delle libc per la
risoluzione dei nomi. I defaults di sarge:
$ cat /etc/host.conf

nel mio /etc/nsswitch.conf c'era questa riga:
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4
l'ho modificata come mi hai suggerito e tutto è andato a posto
