sempra che la scheda di rete non abbia un indirizzo ip assegnato ed è
quindi ovvio che non riesci a comunicare col modem.
 

Si, certo, mi sono dimenticata di dirvi che nel frattempo, essendomi 
resa conto
di questo, avevo editato /etc/network/interfaces e runnato eth0.
Ora la mia scheda di rete ha, o almeno dovrebbe avere un ip:

Ora non so se hai usato un tool per configurare la rete/adsl  

ho runnato pppoeconfig che continua a darmi l'errore:
Sorry, I scanned 2 interface(s), but the Access
Concentrator of your provider did not respond. Please
check your network and modem cables. Another reason
for the scan failure may also be another running pppoe
process which controls the modem.
ho pingato il modem, ma non risponde...
