se veramente l'output del tuo ifconfig è questo:

sempra che la scheda di rete non abbia un indirizzo ip assegnato ed è
quindi ovvio che non riesci a comunicare col modem.
Ora non so se hai usato un tool per configurare la rete/adsl ma potresti
per cominciare editare il file
/etc/network/interfaces (man interfaces)
e settare ip, netmask, etc per la tua scheda di rete.
