Well, a 'tgz' manual installation will usually place the binaries in /usr/local - also check "dpkg -l postfix" to see if dpkg thinks it's installed. How does your machine currently launch postfix? Is it from /etc/init.d/postfix ? If not, then it's unlikely to have been installed via apt. There are plenty of other indicators, but these should give you a good start. Cheers, Gavin.
