I tried all the cron.daily scripts many times by hand and this never happened. Sergey wrote now the same problems (http://lists.debian.org/debian-isp/2001/debian-isp-200110/msg00078.html) and I think this could be a run-parts problem. part of ps(1): ... Processes marked <defunct> are dead processes (so-called "zombies") that remain because their parent has not destroyed them properly. These processes will be destroyed by init(8) if the parent process exits. ... The parent proccess is run-parts if I understand everything correct.
