Why not just purchase the machine from a company that sells them with gigE 
cards and Linux installed, tested, and working?

VA Linux http://www.valinux.com is one company that will sell machines with 
gigE cards fully running.  Unfortunately VA ships with Red Hat pre-loaded, 
but Wichert is a VA employee and he's been quite helpful whenever I have had 
problems getting Debian running properly on VA hardware.  ;)
