If using ProFTPd, maybe do:
UseReverseDNS off
(This is in the proftpd faq.)
I am not sure about wu-ftpd; look at the manual page.
Also, sometimes this problem is caused by IDENT lookups. This can be
disabled in proftpd and wu-ftpd.
