You havent got that much a choice - NFS is not a good solution but one of the most used - autofs/nfs > What kind of authentification can be used in this network ? Normally one uses NIS for this .. BUT - NIS has a couple of security issues and might even incorporate performance problems with this large number of machines - One might want to look at LDAP based solutions as LDAP is explecitely designed for replication of the database and therefor scalable search performance ...
