We do it by having a second NIC card on the machines using internal IPs and simply use a cross-over cable in between them. It is not on the network (and it also won't use up your network bandwidth). I didn't understand exactly your hard-drive swap idea, but it sounds like the computers are local to each other, so just having an extra NIC card and connection may work for you. Jeremy C.
