Make sure your local network is eitehr in /etc/hosts on the ssh server box, or that you're running local rDNS with your private network zone. I see this quite a bit.

what's the /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny entries for sshd: ?
any deny: ALL or something?
