trouble with mgetty and auto ppp

hi i m an undergraduate student trying to setup linux remote access server  using a simple external analog modem ....i m trying to start auto ppp by simlpy uncommenting the line    /Autopp/   -    -    /usr/sbin/pppd file   /etc/options.server   then i tried to dial into my RAS using kppp and PAP authentication . After it connects and before authentication it gives error "couldnt find ppp0 interface" on the client side .   can u help me out wats goin wrong   thnxs in advance faizan
