Make sure that you have an 'n' in the smtpd chroot field in /etc/postfix/master.cf. A '-' is not sufficient to make sure it's not chrooted. Also make sure you have a file /etc/pam.d/smtpd with the following contents: #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_unix_auth.so account required pam_unix_acct.so password required pam_unix_passwd.so session required pam_unix_session.so -- C.
