Thanks for your advice, I've got the problem worked-around now. The extra debugging indicated that something strange was happening with LDAP. As I don't really need LDAP for this machine I turned it off. Later when I have more time I'll debug my LDAP more carefully (gotta fix it as more important machines depend on a similar LDAP setup).
