I've found that some applications rely on the /etc/hosts file else they are really slow to kick in. swat is a great example of this. Make sure your windows machines are referenced in there and see if that helps it.
I have pseudo-static IPs for all my machines (constant DHCP), so it's not a problem, but if they have dynamic IPs then you'd have to work out how to update the hosts file automatically, which I have never done.
