 And the machines that are trying to mount all have valid DNS
entries, with working reverse lookups from the server? Check to
see what the server thinks of the ip addresses.

 Also,  if the wfw machines actually manage to contact the linux 
server you should have something about it in syslog, auth.log,
daemon.log or whatever, with some note about what the linux box
thought was happening.
