It's not useless. As writing really large msgids[tm] without any help on proper wrapping and stuff is "useless" anyway (using your wording) it doesn't make things worse. Tools that support writing large msgids with proper support for wrapping around the text should have no problem with hooking in wdiff for comparing the previous and the current msgid. patch format doesn't really help here anyway: the msgid will get wrapped where gettext thinks its proper so if you remove something in the first line the complete really large msgid will get wrapped and your "patch format" would simply include the complete string from start to the end. wdiff is the only way to go. > It should not be too late to change this in gettext. I really don't think its gettext's call for that, especially since gettext failed anyway with the format for the msgid and msgstr so tools _are_ required to handle it proper, especially for really large msgids.
