Thanks for the replies. IMO it's not obvious that things work that way from the manpage, but well... I've solved it (as suggested by adn) by creating an alias in .bashrc: alias msgstat='msgfmt --stat -c -o /dev/null' So now I just have to remember to run msgstat instead of msgfmt. Cheers, FJP
