It seems fairly clear that forbidding API-compatibility is
troublesome. You appear to be the only DD agreeing with the FAQ
in that thread and you didn't post in the original review.
The gentium package maintainer also considers it non-free.

My original post was discussing the fonts I mentioned, as distro
candidates, and asking for ideas on others. I know there are a lot of
people with varied experience here, and I hoped we would share it and
see what we could find out. Possibly, we could recommend some fonts
for distro., to the appropriate decision-makers.
One of those open, let's-talk-about-this posts. :)
