        So probably they would work even *without* the export.  The reason is
that the environment is inherited from the parent process, but does not
keep in synch.  Therefore, your uterm instance never learned the terminal
got set to en_US.UTF-8.

        BTW, simply setting the locale won't change your keyboard map, so that
won't make uterm work either.
