I didn't know about the installed disk image. I will try once more to do a 
clean net install, and if that fails, look into the disk image. As for the 
alternative terminals, can I view them using expert install?

You know that there is an installed disk image on the net? Virtualbox
should be able to eat it.

You need to be running the semi-graphical version.  It however sometimes
fail to boot, that's why it's not the default.
