Would it be workable to have a script that makes a lot of symlinks in /lib for the libraries in /X11R6/lib, and maybe even run this script automatically after installing packages? I believe apt has some hooks for something like this, at least. This workaround should also work for setuid programs, but many may find it ugly. I know I do.
