$ sudo aptitude remove brltty brltty-x11 xbrlapi Only xbrlapi was removed (looks like the other packages where not installed). I rebooted and still couldn't access X. However tty7 now has an additional line that says: [ 12.148243] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/all, error -110 The .xsession-errors is still the same... However, I found this debian bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=728947 According to this it seems like this is not the real problem...
