Dear all, Change the English name of the Ukrainian capital to Kyiv (not Kiev), to match the internationally recognizable name.
In June 2019, at the request of the U.S. Department of State, the Embassy of Ukraine in the USA, and Ukrainian organizations in the United States, the name «Kyiv» was officially approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names as the only correct name, which resulted in the entire federal government of the United States starting to use the new name [1]. Since the start of the campaign #KyivNotKiev, which has been launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine [2], dozens of airports and airlines have switched to using the name Kyiv, even before the International Air Transport Association officially adopted a new name. [3] At the end of June 2020, Facebook agreed to transliterate Kyiv’s name from the Ukrainian language. On September 16, 2020, the English-language Wikipedia changed the article’s title about Ukraine’s capital from «Kiev» to «Kyiv» [4]. Many major world media, including the BBC, The Guardian, Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, The Globe and Mail, The Washington Post, Financial Times, The Economist, The Daily Telegraph, The New York Times [5], and other foreign English-language media are using «Kyiv» instead of «Kiev» in their articles. The name cannot be changed in the upstream project (tzdata) because it is treated there as an ID, not as a display name (as explained by Lester Caine in [6]).
