Let me guess - can you create an unbootable image with broken /sbin/init: > ("kernel panic, attempted to kill init"). ? This image's / can be mounted (smth. like mount -o loop,offset=$((512*63)) -t ext3 ...) and all libs and ld.so cache checked against libc6 2.11.1-3 or whatever.
