Sounds strange to me, but I tried dropping in kernel-image-2.4.21-sparc32 (single-CPU box here), and it works nicely. So it actually looks to be a kernel issue, yes. Or at the least it is being masked by upgrading the kernel. I guess I'll have to start digging through the sources, and try to figure out what actually happened.
