Several. First, in some cases you can more easily specify a compiler binary than alternate flags. Such cases include software with makefiles that (brokenly) override CFLAGS, or that allow a user-specified CFLAGS to override their own CFLAGS and break things. Second, it would allow uniformity between cross-compilers and biarch compilers. This would make it easier to tell a configure script to target the alternate architecture. It would also help when trying to use distcc across machines of various architectures. - Josh Triplett
