I think I looked at fixing this in 2.95 a long time ago and discovered that it would be too hard. So, while it seems like a reasonable idea to file a bug report in order to get the problem documented, there isn't a lot of point in making it release critical and we will probably end up just tagging it "wontfix". The 3.0.3 not-buildable problem does merit an RC bug. I think it's a constant-pool handling problem of some kind; something along the lines of objects being eliminated but references to them still hanging around. p.
