I've uploaded experimental gcc-3.0 and supporting binutils packages to http://people.debian.org/~tausq/ia64/
They appear to fix some of the issues we've seen with gcc-2.96. However, at the present time there is no plan to move to gcc-3.0 as the default compiler toolchain for IA64 for the woody release. This is mostly motivated by the fact that other IA64 GNU/Linux distributions out there are all running gcc-2.96, and gcc-3.0 is not backward compatible with gcc-2.96 In our testing, we have found that gcc-2.96 requires an older version of binutils (2.10.91.0.2), which is currently supplied as an ia64-only package. gcc-3.0 works best with a newer binutils, such as 2.11.90.0.24 (currently the default in the unstable distribution) This means that currently you cannot run both toolchains at the same time. We hope to find a solution to this problem shortly. If anyone knows how to make gcc-2.96 work well with latest Debian binutils, please let us know! thanks, randolph -- Debian Developer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://www.TauSq.org/
