I am not sure on this either. Since a couple of week I have been busy with deploying Debian Edu and documenting and improviding our deployment system. This is still all very rudimentary and unfortunately in German:

Hopefully in a couple of weeks time, there will be some more time for looking at Debian Edu code itself again (as opposed to patching stuff in during deployment).
I think for squeeze we should basically focus on fixing and improving functionality, but the scope of interpretation may vary here.
Btw. talking about functionality: I am very concerned about using network-manager on diskless machines. We have loads of timing issues / race conditions here and in our testlab I will test dropping network-manager completely from those machines in the near future.
