Multiple volume groups don't work with GRUB 1.95 however. This bug has been fixed in 1.96." This is available in Debian through package: grub-pc. But only for PC/BIOS architecture. [1] Package: grub now GRUB Legacy is in maintainance mode and new features are only accepted in GRUB 2 (grub-pc package). [2] There are also GRUB packages for Open Firmware version and LinuxBIOS version. I wonder if we'd like to include it in our Lenny.
