The best approach for noticing new upstream releases of software is to file a bugreport (severity "wishlist") against the Debian package containing it.
That way your notice reached the maintainer directly, is not forgotten over time, others wanting to say the same can see that the maintainer is already aware, and when the newer version is packaged you automatically gets a notice about it.
For filing bugreports (and you use Debian already) I recommend using the tool "reportbug" found in the package by the same name. It is a command line tools taking you through a couple of questions leading to bugreports being filed optimally.
Install "reportbug" ("apt-get install reportbug") and do "reportbug drgeo".
