Why does dpkg invoke find instead of doing own searches?

Hi all,

Can someone clarify for me why dpkg invokes 'find' to search for files, 
instead of having it's own code?

Was this just done as a quick hack that worked and stayed, or are there 
compelling reasons for not internalising the find code?
