Package: dpkg Version: 1.10.25 Severity: wishlist dpkg should create a (never rotating) logfile that contains all action in the following way:
2006.12.06 21:11:10 aptitude 0.2.15.8-1 successfully installed 2006.12.06 21:11:20 edict 2004.08.04-1 pruned 2006.12.06 21:12:14 tetex-bin updated form 2.0.2-23 to 2.0.2-24 This file should contain the whole history of the system over years. This file should be human readable and parsable. My reasons for such a file are: 1.) The system administrator should have a chance to reproduce, what he did to his system. 2.) The logfile should be parsable in order to present the Information to users. So that selected informations can be wrapped into a web page that can link to further information... ... e.g. the local /usr/share/doc/<packagename> directories. So that every user of a can follow what has been installed or updated. (And optionally look at the changelogs.) To give people insight into what happened can be a big factor if you have to convince people that are normally used to insall everything themselves on their M$ OS. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.9-1-686-smp Locale: LANG=de_DE, LC_CTYPE=de_DE (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages dpkg depends on: ii dselect 1.10.25 a user tool to manage Debian packa ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-18 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an -- no debconf information
