as colin watson rightly supposed, the problem must be due to the ram i use (4 simm for a total of 64M)
after the recent upgradings of the pacckage i have noticed the error msg wording has been changed and now i get an error indicating that dselect cannot allocate memory and effect a fork
and since the error occurs only in one out of four my pc's i am sure it is due to the ram and for that reason i agree it is not a dselect bug (unless we consider as a bug that the previous error msg wording was quite obscure for a not debian developer :-DDDD.

thanks
aldo
