While I agree with most of what you wrote, you're wrong on this one. There's a *lot* of history of using the space bar to "do the next thing" in Unix console programs (more/less, most news readers and existing mail readers). And there's no reason *not* to use them -- what else would you bind to the space key? You're right: the defaults should cater to the new user, but there's no reason to deliberatly aggravate the experienced user.
